11.00 - 11.45 Keynote: Uniface 2.0 Vision and Strategy
The Application Development Market is in turmoil. More and more organizations realize that Application Development in popular 3GL languages such as Java and .NET are not bringing the benefits these technologies promised. Maintenance and upgrading of these applications is very often too complex and expensive. As a result we see the commitment to Java and .NET being reconsidered in the marketplace and customers are looking at other technologies such as SODA or SaaS. Learn in this presentation what this paradigm shift means for Uniface business and technology in the future.

Aad van Schetsen, Vice President Uniface, Compuware

11.45 - 12.30 Keynote: The Uniface APS Roadmap
Over the last 25 years the successful Uniface Application Platform Suite has been continuously enriched to support the latest technology trends for its developers. In future versions of the Uniface APS we will continue executing this vision and make the use of development technologies like Web 2.0, SaaS, aPaaS, SOA, Enterprise Mash Ups and new deployment architectures, as easy as possible for new and existing Uniface architects and developers. This roadmap presentation will give in-depth information about how this vision pragmatically translates into the future plans for the Uniface APS and how the Uniface Lab plans to make these new technologies available to the Uniface community.

Ton Blankers, Product Manager Uniface, Compuware

12.30 - 13.45 Lunch in Partner Exhibition Area

12.50 - 13.40 Lunch + Learn sessions
These are business and technical chalk talks, which allow a small group of conference delegates to discuss a particular topic of interest over lunch.

Modern Service Oriented Architecture – generating reports
Reporting has long been a sore subject for Uniface applications. There have been many different solutions over the years but none of them quite reach the balance of development ease and power, end user customization and presentation quality. This session will show a reporting architecture that comes the closest yet to achieving this balance. Indeed CollegeNET's experience of retrofitting its previous reporting system to this new architecture has yielded benefits along every facet of development and deployment.

Andy Heydon, VP, Software Development, CollegeNET Inc

Performance and Productivity: A Practical case study into Uniface performance
JAVA vs. .NET, PHP vs. J2EE – to the non I.T. literate it all sounds like a George Lucas plot from Star Wars. In 2003 the middleware company published a study comparing the JAVA/J2EE reference application PetStore and Microsoft's own .NET performance tuned application PetShop. How could we resist? So we didn't, we extended the study to Uniface 9.2, retested the Microsoft PetShop winner with Uniface on newer more up-to-date hardware.
Want to hear more? Well grab your light saber and join us to see how it all turned out, and may the force, be with you!

George Mockford, Uniface Subject Matter Expert, Compuware

Online Community
In June 2008 the Uniface.info website was launched and in the first 2 months over 240 Uniface users registered to become members of the Uniface community.
In this session we will discuss experiences and expectations of the Uniface community website. Topics like member contributions, moderation roles, site promotion and look and feel will be on the agenda.

Implementing Unicode using Uniface 9: Exploring the vast realm of global software sales, support, and distribution
JDA's retail merchandising application is a globally-distributed application with customers around the globe. After years of struggling with multiple character set issues, it was apparent that implementing Unicode using Uniface 9 would save our development organization precious time and money. This case study will explore the challenges and steps in planning and executing Unicode implementation.

Karl Sup, Development Director, JDA Software, Inc.

TECHNICAL PROGRAM
Uniface Easy Deployment (No more URR and DOL files)
With the introduction of easy deployment, it is possible to deploy Uniface applications in a modular way, where every module can be packed in one or more Uniface archives (.UAR files). Just copy the archives to the runtime environment, restart and... done! No more merging of URR and DOL files or maintaining complex ULANA, USYSANA or UOBJ tables.

Uniface Archives are in standard ZIP format and support all types of resources, including compiled components, global objects, signatures, entity descriptors, etc. The Uniface runtime executes directly from these archives. Whether you want to deploy a complete application, a subset (handy for delivering patches) or only a single component, signature, message or glyph; it all works in the same consistent way.

This session explains the advantages of this new way of deploying your application, and takes you through the steps of how to do it, including conversion of existing applications.

Michel van den Berg, Lead Software Developer

BUSINESS PROGRAM
Using "Rich Web" to reproduce all the sophisticated functionality of Manhattans client/server product - ahead of its time
Raindrop took the decision to skip a generation and go straight to "rich web" or second-generation web technology prompted by interest from the US in the early 2000's. Steve explains the challenges this presented and how Manhattan became the only property ERP system that can claim to have a second-generation web product, giving Manhattan a big technical step ahead of its competitors.

Steve Vatidis, Group Managing Director, Raindrop Information Systems Ltd

TECHNICAL PROGRAM
SOA and Business Process Orchestration>
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has become the new de facto standard for designing and creating reusable business rules and logic that can be shared enterprise wide in a distributed manner. If SOA is well-executed, its implementations will bridge the wide gap between the IT and the business and, in parallel, implement the robust reuse of existing technology and application code with unprecedented flexibility and cost effectiveness. However, the rapid adoption of distributed cross-platform SOA architecture fundamentals can lead to unmanageable complexities for IT. Without an adequate means of control, SOA can quickly lead to trouble. Business Process Orchestration (BPO) with SOA must be introduced into all IT portfolios to provide that control. The failure to implement BPO on top of SOA will result in unmanageable architecture where a distributed mess of software components will offer poor business support.

This session will show how Uniface Flow can provide BPO "umbrella" on top of the SOA implementation within existing Uniface applications and beyond.

Budget Neutral Uniface Migrations
A number of companies are still working on old Uniface versions. This has consequences for both their opportunities as well as for the support given by Compuware.
"Budget Neutral Migrations" offers the opportunity to migrate their 'old' Uniface environment to a new environment. In order to make this shift the Uniface applications are outsourced for a fixed period at the exact same cost rate as the company is paying in the current situation. During this period the system is both maintained and migrated. The duration is depending on the underlying ROI. Afterwards, once the company in sources the environment most of the time, the maintenance cost will be lower than before.

Rolf Craenen, Manager Enterprise Engineering, Sogeti Nederland B.V.
